Colonoscopy
A Key Examination for Your Digestive Health
Colonoscopy is the reference examination for exploring the colon and rectum. It allows for the detection and removal of polyps, investigation of bleeding causes, diagnosis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and prevention of colorectal cancer. Quick and safe, it provides a detailed view of the colonic mucosa to enable targeted and effective treatment.
What Is a Colonoscopy?
- Detecting and removing polyps (polypectomy)
- Investigating the cause of digestive bleeding or anemia
- Diagnosing or monitoring an inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
- Investigating abdominal pain, bowel habit changes, or unexplained weight loss
- Monitoring patients at high risk of colorectal cancer based on family history
- Screening and treatment at the same time (polyps removed immediately)
- Accurate diagnosis for a fast treatment plan
- Minimally invasive procedure and generally well tolerated
- Extended surveillance interval in case of a normal colonoscopy
More Details About Colonoscopy
The procedure is generally performed under intravenous conscious sedation. If you receive sedation, you will not be allowed to drive for the rest of the day. Make sure you are accompanied by someone who can take you home.
The examination, including the physician’s assessment and the colonoscopy, takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. After the procedure, you will remain in the recovery area for about 30 minutes.
As with any medical procedure, adverse effects may occur: post-polypectomy bleeding (<1%) or perforation (<0.1%). However, these complications remain rare.
Conditions That May Require a Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy recommendations vary based on age, medical history, and the presence of symptoms. Here are the most common situations:
- Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
- Persistent abdominal pain or unexplained cramps
- Changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation)
- Positive FIT test
- Screening for polyps or colorectal cancer starting at age 45, or earlier in case of family history
- Follow-up of polyps or colorectal cancer
- Evaluation and follow-up of inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
- Investigation of iron-deficiency anemia or unexplained iron deficiency
- Unintentional weight loss
- Evaluation of diverticulosis or after diverticulitis
- Monitoring of hereditary syndromes (Lynch syndrome, familial polyposis)
- Suspicion of occult colorectal cancer
If you have any of these conditions or a family history of colorectal diseases, contact us for a consultation and personalized follow-up. Early detection through appropriate examinations can be essential for effective treatment and the prevention of certain cancers.

It is rare to find a doctor who truly listens and genuinely cares about their patients, but Dr. Coussa is exactly that. He is incredibly patient and takes the time to answer all of my questions. After years of struggling with digestive issues and gastroesophageal reflux, I finally found relief thanks to him.
