What Is a FibroScan?
A technology called transient elastography, which sends small, painless vibrations through the skin to measure liver stiffness. The probe instantly measures liver rigidity and fat content. Recommended for:
- Screening for fibrosis and cirrhosis in individuals with fatty liver
- Monitoring the progression of treated or untreated hepatitis B and C
- Assessing patients with chronic alcohol consumption or iron overload
- Monitoring treatment response and adjusting follow-up
- Completely painless, with no needles or anesthesia
- Immediate results (report provided at the end of the test)
- Repeatable test allowing regular monitoring of progress
- Reduces the need for liver biopsy
More Details About the FibroScan
- Fast solid food ≥ 3 hours before the test. Water is allowed.
- Approximately 10–15 min
None; low-intensity ultrasound.
Less accurate in individuals with morbid obesity, acute liver inflammation, or right-sided heart failure. In these cases, other tests may be recommended (MRI, biopsy).
