Sedation

The procedure is usually performed under conscious sedation but can also be done without sedation, depending on the patient’s preference.

If you receive sedation, you will not be allowed to drive for the rest of the day. Make sure someone can accompany you home.

Duration
  • The procedure, including the physician’s evaluation and the gastroscopy, lasts approximately 30 minutes
  • After the procedure, you will remain in the recovery room for about 30 minutes.
Risks

Gastroscopy is generally a very safe procedure. As with any medical intervention, side effects can occur, such as bleeding or, very rarely, perforation. However, these complications are extremely rare, occurring in less than 0.01% of cases.
